Judge Orders Jail Time, Community Service for Contempt of Court by Deadbeat Dad, Millionaire Richard Lorden, Who Avoids Payment by Living in Mexico, According to the Law Offices of Jose Mariano Castillo

More Than $3.5 Million in Child and Spousal Support Awarded in Case Dragged Out for 23 Years

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Law Offices of Jose Mariano Castillo announces that in one of the longest-lasting international “deadbeat dad” cases in recent years, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maren Nelson on April 5 ruled that Richard Lorden was guilty of 19 counts of contempt of court and sentenced him to serve five days in jail beginning April 16. On April 22, he must report for 240 hours of community service. Failing to do that, he must serve an additional 2040 hours of community service.

Richard Lorden was first convicted of failing to pay child and spousal support in October 1988. The Court has found that he owes his former wife, Judy Lorden, a total of $3,524,148 in child and spousal support and interest, which he still has not paid.

In the original divorce settlement, Judy Lorden was awarded $5,000 per month for spousal support and $3,000 per month for child support, as of 1987, the year of their divorce. Under the court order, Richard Lorden was to pay child support until their son Bryan, born in 1983, reached 18 years of age.

Despite scores of hearings and numerous orders by the Judge for Mr. Lorden to appear in person, he has never done so, including his failure to attend in person the mandatory settlement hearing the Judge mandated.

According to Judy Lorden’s attorney, Jose Mariano Castillo, “Richard Lorden has ignored the court’s order to support his child and his wife for more than 20 years. He has moved to Mexico City where he lives an extravagant lifestyle in the belief that he is beyond the reach of U.S. law. He has continued to flout the law and to avoid meeting his legal responsibilities. A highly successful businessman, Mr. Lorden has resided in Mexico under the name of Ricardo Lorden Brenzel and others.”

Steve Hollatz-Castillo served as co-counsel and argued the case for Judy Lorden.

Superior Court Case Number: D191152.
